Howdy!

Welcome to the Chuck Asay archives. I’m pleased to be a part of the Limited Government Forum. I fit right in. When I first started drawing cartoons, I was pretty liberal, thinking government was a solution to almost everything. Now I believe, like Ronald Reagan, that government is part of the problem.

Here’s a little background.

I was born in Alamosa, Colorado in 1942.

I was raised on a farm with one brother and two sisters. Everyone drew for entertainment, including my mother and father. My whole family was close. We talked about religion and politics all the time and we all thought everyone was entitled to our opinions. Even though we argued sometimes it never seemed to affect our relationships. I think that is why, to this day, I like talking with people who seem to hate me. I figure they don’t hate me, they just don’t care for my ideas.

I have a degree from Adams State College in Art and Education. I taught school in Aspen and in Taos. I moved to Taos from Aspen to see if I could break into the editorial cartooning racket. The Taos News, a weekly newspaper, published my first cartoons.

When we moved to Colorado Springs in 1978, there were two competing papers. Both needed (although they didn’t know it at the time) a cartoonist to give their readers local opinions. That, I believed, should be me. I offered my services, saying I could provide them with 3 local cartoons a week on a speculative basis. The Colorado Springs Sun took a chance on me. They paid me $15 for every cartoon they published. That wasn’t much of a risk for the newspaper and it helped me break into the cartooning business. This is the free market at work, folks, and it certainly worked for me.

Later, the Gazette, a Freedom Newspaper, bought the Colorado Springs Sun and closed it down. They hired me on and I drew cartoons for the Gazette for over 20 years.

Now I am semi-retired and drawing four cartoons a week for Creator’s Syndicate, Inc. I also am working on some books and doing speeches for groups who want to hear my free-market, limited-government rants. Have power point, will travel.

If you want to contact me, or arrange to have me come and speak to your group, my e-mail is acdoodle1@mindspring.com. I hope to have a web site up soon.

Thanks for reading,

Chuck Asay
